Over 100 teams, nearly 2000 matches
(No Comments | Add/read comments )

This past Thursday marked the beginning of the 2007 girls season. This season YouthSoccerNet.com will report on over 100 sides in Kansas and Missouri. Those 100 plus teams will play near 2000 matches leading to the state tournaments in May.

Welcome to the Wichita teams. Twelve teams from the Wichita area submitted their schedules. With the addition of the 12 sides, YSN covers teams from Liberal to Kansas City which now includes the two largest cities in the state.

The decisive moment
Every sports photographer wants to take a photo of the game winning moment. Take it from me, it doesn't happen too often.

In what the Dana College Sport Information Director Shad Beam said was, "one of the biggest wins in the programs five year history", Beam, also the head coach of the mens soccer team, got the game winner.

You might ask, what was the head coach doing shooting photos of the match when you would assume he would be on the beach directing his charges on the pitch. Well, Beam got a red card and was doing his sports information duties from the sidelines. All Beam would say about the red card was, "don't get me stated on the reason."

I guess if you had to sit out a match and watch it from the sideline, one of the biggest wins in school history would be the one to choose.

Congrats to Coach/SID Chad Beam on the win and the photo. --YSN

Post your game photos on YouthSoccerNet.com
So, you got a great action photo from your son's opening match last night. Now, what to do with it? Probably sent a copy to grandparents or other family members. Probably saved it to the hard drive where it will soon be forgotten.

What about sharing your photos with the YSN community? YSN created tools that make it easy to post your photos on YSN. The YSN blogging tools are accessible on the web.

I have megs and megs of photos sitting on multiple hards drives on multiple computers. Many are posted on YSN and are often views. The photos on the hard drives are quickly forgotten. --YSN

Arena's gone
(No Comments | Add/read comments )

Fifty-two out of 56 YSN users wanted Bruce Arena to step down as the U.S. National coach. Today they got their way when the U.S. Soccer announced that Arena's contract would not be renewed at the end of the year. What do you think?

Who to root for now that U.S. is gone
(No Comments | Add/read comments )

This World Cup is different from the last four. This year, the U.S. was my team, my only team. My expectations for the team were high. A good showing in the “group of death” was expected. Now that the Yanks are gone from the competition I am looking for another sides to root for.

In 1994, I watched the Cup only because it was on U.S. soil. The U.S. lads made it out of group play behind the coaching of well-traveled World Cup coach Bora Milutinovic only to be defeated 1-0 by the Brazilians in the Round of 16. My team in 1994 was the Netherlands and my hero the Netherlands’ #10 Dennis Bergkamp. Bergkamp’s amazing goal in the Netherlands’ 3-2 lost to the eventual Cup champs Brazil sealed the deal for me.

It was all France in 1998 behind the brilliance of Zidane. His two headers in the first period of the finals against Brazil were amazing. I watched the U.S. matches but it was cruel and unusual punishment. The U.S. ended up dead last in the tournament. A bit of trivia for you. Iran's only win in the all World Cup competitions remains their win over the U.S. in 1998.

After the U.S. defeated a cocky Portugal side 3-2 in their 2002 World Cup opening match, I climbed aboard the U.S. bandwagon. The other teams were the opponents not to be rooted for but to beaten. The 2002 Cup was the coming out party for Bruce Arena, Landon Donovan, and DaMarcus Beasley. After the Germans beat the U.S. in the round of eight, I couldn't wait until 2006.

Looking back to 2002, the Yanks’ World Cup run created unrealistic expectations for the 2006 World Cup. Even after the groups where announced and most pundits declared that the U.S. would have a tough test to advance, I still expected the U.S. to give a good showing and make it hard for the eventual group winners. The U.S. results say it all.

Now, to answer the point of this post. Who am I going to root for in this World Cup? It won't be Brazil though I love to watch the side play the game. I just naturally root for the underdog and don't like it when one team dominates any event like Brazil dominates the World Cup.

Argentina, Netherlands, England and Germany are candidates. France is a perennial favorite. But currently, I am an Australia fan at least until the Socceroos get beat. My allegiance will be short lived as the Roos take on Italy in the Round of 16 and should get beat. If the Roos can get by Italy, they could end up in the semifinals against either Germany or Argentina.

With the Roos gone, I think I will pull for the Brits. I think England will make it to the semifinals where they should play Brazil. After England gets beat by Brazil (again), the English press will have a heyday and I enjoy reading the tabloids the day after England gets dump from a competition.

The 2006 World Cup Finals could be a repeat of the 2002 Cup Finals with Germany meeting Brazil to see who lifts the Cup. If that's the case, I will root for the Germans.

As you can see, the naturally order of soccer world is restored and I am back to looking for a side to cheer for. I hope the U.S. can get its act together by 2010 but if they can’t, there will be plenty of sides to cheer for when the World Cup visits Africa. Stay tuned.

One goal, one point, one-way ticket home
(No Comments | Add/read comments )

I made arrangements to stay at home Thursday morning and watch the U.S. vs. Ghana match with my son hoping that the U.S. side could put it together for one match and advance to the knock out stage. Not!

The questionable penalty played a part in the U.S. defeat but there were several other areas of concerns. First, set pieces for the U.S. were wasted in most cases. Second, the stars either disappeared for long stretches or made questionable decisions on the ball. And last, you have to ask if U.S. Coach Bruce Arena outlasted his effectiveness.

Jim Rome pointed out on his talk show on Thursday, that it’s lucky that no one cares about soccer or there would be h--- to pay. I believe many fans care and there will be changes.

How about Australia coach Guus Hiddink, Portugal manager Luiz Felipe Scolari or Germany coach Jurgen Klinsman as the new U.S. national coach? --YSN

Shared title? UNBELIEVALBE!

A draw in the finals of the Missouri State Championship? You got to be kidding me.

That's what happened Saturday in the Missouri Class 1 State Championship in St. Louis. After 120 minutes of play, Lee's Summit West and Visitation Academy drew 0-0 and were told the teams would share the championship.

Don't get me wrong I love a good 0-0 draw in the regular season. Draws are a part of the game but the conventional thinking in the U.S. is that every sporting contest should end with a winner and we go to extremes to declare a winner. Most sports created in the U.S. have a winner and if we adopt the sport, we change it so there is a winner.

So, why on earth do we allow a draw in the State Championship match? No winner in the biggest match of the season; unthinkable. A sporting contest in the U.S. without a winner. UNBELIEVABLE!

Congratulatins to the Lee's Summit West Titans on an oustanding 24-1-1 season and back-to-back state championships. Five years from now, the 2006 Class 1 state champion will depend on who you talk to. --YSN

Class 2 sectional matchups nearly as expected
Only half of my favorites in Class 2 made it through to the sectionals at Blue Springs South on Tuesday.

Park Hill knocked out my favorite Park Hill South in a semi matchup and Liberty prevailed over Park Hill in the Distrcit 16 finals to advance. Blue Springs South bounced my favorite Blue Springs in the District 14 finals. St. Teresa's and Lee's Summit North made it through as predicted.

Liberty take on 12-1-1 St. Teresa's in the 7:30 p.m. sectional match on Tuesday (Check out how the teams fared against common opponents). The Stars knocked off Liberty 3-1 way back in March. St. Teresa's should advance but Liberty could be a test for the Stars. Liberty is playing well at the right time. They won District 16 with a win over defending district champs Park Hill 3-2.

Lee's Summit North face Blue Springs South (Common Opponents) in the 5:30 p.m. match. If there is home field advantage in high school soccer then Blue Springs South will have it but I don't think it will be enough to tame the Broncos. The Broncos are an experienced side and probably have the best strike team in the area with Morgan Marlborough (42 goals) and Danielle Doerfler (20 goals).

The quarterfinal should be a rematch between St. Teresa's and Lee's Summit North (Common Opponents). The Broncos are one of only two teams to not get beat by the Stars. The Broncos and the Stars tied 2-2 back on April 20. Since the April 20 meeting, St. Teresa's have nine wins, no loses allowing only two goals. The Broncos 8-1 with the lose coming at the hands of Aquinas.

The rematch will be another close match. Lee's Summit North should score. The difference could be St. Teresa's junior playermaker Lauren Fowlkes in the center of the pitch. One of her targets will be Danielle Martens, sophomore, who has score seven goals in the last three matches including a hat trick against Sion in the District 15 finals.

St. Teresa's should get a chance to defend their 2005 state championship in St. Louis on June 2-3. Standing in their way are a couple familar sides, Incarnate Word, 15-0 and St. Joseph's 21-0-1. Incarnate and St. Joseph's will likely meet each other in the quarterfinals with the winner to face the St. Teresa's, Lee's Summit North winner in the semifinals on June 2.

05/21/2006 12:52 PM
Kansas 6A, a toss up
The surprise team in the Kansas 6A Quarterfinals is SM East, a winner over the #3 and #4 seeds in the Northeast Regional 3. Now, East must knockoff SM West, the #1 seed in the Northest region, on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Shawnee Mission Complex. (Common Opponents).

In East's Regional 3 wins, the Lancers got a goal and held on for 1-0 wins. SM West don't score many goals but don't need many because their defense don't give up goals. The Vikings have recorded 17 shutout for the year. Whichever team survives and advances will probably win 1-0 or in a shootout.

The other quarterfinal between Oathe South and Washburn Rural (Common Opponents) is just as close to call as other quarterfinal. Both side have similar records. South at 16-2 and Washburn Rural at 15-1-2. The scores against the teams they both played are similar. This is another 1-0 or shutout win for one of the teams.

05/21/2006 12:51 PM
Class 1 sectionals matchup hot teams
Lee's Summit West, Platte County and O'Hara all made it to the sectionals as expected. St. Pius X was the surprise in District 14. The Warriors put together a three game winning streak knocking out the top two seeds on their way to the championship and a place in Tuesday's Sectional at Excelsior Springs.

St. Pius need to knockoff a couple more top seeded teams before they can get to St. Louis. First up, Platte County at 6 p.m Tuesday. Platte County bring a ten game winning streak into the contest and last lose to O'Hara on April 22. Platte County should put a stop to Pius' winning streak and advance to the finals on May 27. Common Opponents.

The other game in Class 1 matches two of the hottest teams in the city. Lee's Summit West, the defending Class 1 state champion, haven't lose since March 31 when Class 2 Lee's Summit beat them 2-0. O'Hara have four loses, three to Class 2 powers St. Teresa's, Notre Dame de Sion and Bishop Miege. (Common Opponents).

Lee's Summit West and O'Hara can score goals, lots of goals. West's goals come from Kelsey Piepergerdes (18), Alyssa Mullen (17), Christina Dittmann (16) and Amanda Kersting (14). O'Hara's goals come from Michaella Fulmer (54) but teams have to watch Jordan McCullough (12).

Lee's Summit West and Platte County (Common Opponents) should meet in the quarterfinals and Lee's Summit West should advance to the state semifinals to defend their 2005 title.

05/21/2006 12:51 PM
Kansas 5-1A features last years champs battling it out
St. Thomas Aquinas and Blue Valley West were last year's state champs. Aquinas were the 6A winner while BVW captured the 5-1A title. Now, Aquinas are 5-1A and looking for the 5-1A trophy and should play BVW for the title.

Aquinas square off against Bishop Miege at 6:30 p.m. (Common Opponents) at Aquinas. Aquinas have the advantage in head-to-head play with a 3-0 win over Miege on May 1. Aquinas should advance to the Saturday state championship.

The BVW and Topeka West battle in the other quarterfinal match at 6:30 at Blue Valley West. BVW should move on to setup a championship match featuring last year's State Champs. Aquinas should prevail and get a 5-1A state championship to match last year's 6A title.

05/17/2006 9:44 AM
Playoffs by the numbers
Since the first games of the two state playoffs on Saturday, 56 games have been played between 106 teams. Twenty-two game were played on Wednesday alone.

209 goals have been scored by 144 different players. The top scorer in the playoff, so far, is Anna White, Warrensburg with seven goals.

Stay tuned. More to come.

05/13/2006 8:30 AM
Let the playoffs begin
Today is the day all Missouri teams have been waiting for. The 2006 state playoffs begin today with first round district matches. Today's matches are the first step to the State finals in St. Louis on June 2 and 3.

Many of the favorites are off today with first round byes and will begin play on either Monday or Tuesday.

In class 2, Blue Spings, Lee's Summit North, St. Teresa's and Park Hill South should be the favorites to advance to the sectionals on May 23 at Blue Springs South.

The district 13 finals could be the third meeting this season between Lee's Summit and Lee's Summit North. North shutout Lee's Summit in both previous meetings but according to an old saying, it's tough to beat a team three times.

If North can get by Lee's Summit then the quarterfinals and a trip to St. Louis could be a rematch between LSN and St. Teresa's. Earlier this season LSN and Teresa's played to a 2-2 draw.

In class 1, three of the four district champs look to be Lee's Summit West, O'Hara, and Platte County.

The district 14 champ is a tougher call. Kearny and Smithville should battle it out for the title in a close match. The winner should face Platte County with Platte County advancing to the quarters.

LSW should meet Platte County in the quarters in Excelsior Springs on May 27.

Brackets come out today for the Kansas State playoffs. Look of the playoff schedules later today or tommorrow. --YSN

Don't miss this one!
Area soccer fans are in for a treat this Friday when Aquinas and Lee's Summit North square off at Aquinas. This match would never have happen except for rainouts for the two sides.

The two sides are among the top three teams in the city and in the top 5 in Missouri and Kansas.

St. Teresa's recently defeated Aquinas 1-0 at St. Teresa's though Aquinas defeated the Stars 2-1 in the MO-KAN Tournament earlier this season. LSN tied St. Teresa's 2-2 a couple weeks ago.

LSN has gone 12 games without a defeat after losing 2-1 to Olathe East in the opening match of the season. Besides the St. Teresa's lose, Aquinas has only one other lost to Incarnate Word in a shootout.

Both sides are tough to score against but can score on the other end.

Thanks for the scores, looking for more
Getting scores on a tournament weekend it very difficult and I would like to thank all the coaches and parents who submitted scores from the weekend matches. I received most of the scores thanks to you.

I am missing game results from the Lee's Summit and Fort Osage matches at the Capitol City Classic. If you know the results for the matches, please send them to YSN. I also have no scores from Sedalia where several area teams were over the weekend. Again, if you have game results from the tournament, please send to YSN.

I also need the placing for the Northland and Oak Park tournaments. If anyone has photos from the weekend, please submit at Gameday.

Congrats to Lee's Summit and Lee's Summit West for winning tournaments over the weekend. Lee's Summit won the Capitol City Classic with a 3-0 shutout win over the host city, Jefferson City. Lee's Summit West scored 20 goals and allowed one in their run to the West Plains Lady Zizzer Soccer Classic title. --YSN

We're back
YSN is back online after a couple visits from the cable man and a new cable modem. The site was down for about 20 hours. I will post Thursday night match results as quickly as I can. If you notice missing game, please let me know.

YSN provides scores to Mo. HS coaches' website
YouthSoccerNet.com is providing up-to-date scores from the western Missouri region to the
Missouri State High School Soccer Coaches Association website.

"One of the things the coaches in our association have wanted for a while is a way to track scores from across the state," said Chris Miller, Jefferson City girls coach and MSHSSCA webmaster. "(YSN) sure makes the state a lot smaller."

I would like to thank Chris Miller and Kristina Miller, MSHSSCA webmaster, for making it all work.

I am very excited about the arrangement with MSHSSCA. The added exposure from www.MoSoccerCoach.com should give soccer in the west a higher profile with coaches across the state. --YSN

04/19/2006 7:26 PM
MatchTracker is back
MatchTracker is alive and well and back online after I fixed a bug in the game date format.

MatchTracker is a easy and convenient way to track scores as they are posted to YSN. I usually post score between 8-11 p.m. and 4-7 a.m. A link to MatchTracker is located in the top navigation tabs.

04/06/2006 7:44 PM
Howell North joins YSN
I just post the Howell North High School schedule and roster. HNHS is the first high school from the St. Louis area to join YSN. YSN now covers high school soccer from St. Louis to the Little Apple.

Baker scores in threes against Benton
Kristin Baker recorded her third career hat trick last night when Bishop LeBlond beat Benton 4-2, all against Benton.

Major database problems
I just finished fixing a major database problem. Tho, the problem was more like user error; I wiped out a bunch of data. Because of the error, I had to roll the site back to Saturday's backup and then add all the scores for the past four days. So, if you saw strange data thoughout the day it was caused by me trying to get the DB up-to-date. I believe all is fix but if you see wrong data let me know.

03/23/2006 10:07 AM
ZERO goals scored during LS tournament
The correct answer to the YSN poll question, "How many goals will be scored in the Lee's Summit North tournament?" is ZERO and that's too bad. (A few users jumped right on the poll with the correct answer after the tournament was called.)

The Lee's Summit tournaments are well organized and ran events providing area sides with good early season competition before entering league play.

Occasionally, the tournaments can provide local soccer fans with interesting matchups. For example, the Park Hill vs. Park Hill South match. The matchup would have been both teams' first match of the 2006 season and a rematch in May in the Distict playoffs would be the last match of the season for the losing team.

Let's hope that next year the weather stays dry and the games go on as scheduled.

03/17/2006 3:22 PM
Three down, a lot more to go
There are nearly 750 matches in the YSN Calendar. Three down and 747 matches to go not counting the playoffs.

The Lee's Summit Tournaments kick off on Monday at the three high schools. An interesting matchups on Monday is Park Hill vs. Park Hill South.

2006 Girls soccer season underway
Thursday night the 2006 Girls soccer season got underway with several Kansas schools hitting the pitch. Six of the 65 schools tracked on YSN played Thursday.

In an area match, Leavenworth fell by Topeka West 3-1. Carl Meinke uploaded several photos from the match to Gameday Photos. One of his photos ran as the main photo on the homepage.

A reminder to YSN users that anyone can upload game photos to YSN by going to GameDay Photos. I will occassionally use Gameday Photos on the homepage.

How to become part of YSN
Three weeks remain before the opening matches of the 2006 Girls soccer season and YouthSoccerNet.com is gearing up to make it easier than ever to get your matches covered on YouthSoccerNet.com. During the 2005 Boys season, YSN covered 54 boys teams and the nearly 800 matches those teams participated in. Soccer fans from the two state areas viewed nearly 250,000 pages from August 2005 through mid-November 2005. Users spent most of their time viewing the area-wide schedule and match results. The goal is to match those numbers for the 2006 Girls season.

YSN can't do that without your help.

First, I need schedules and soon. So far, twenty-three teams have submitted schedules and assured that their match results will be included on YSN. Some of the teams are probably your rivals or league opponents.

Any high school in Missouri and Kansas can submit their schedule. If you know coaches who might be interested in posting their results to YSN, please, forward this email to them.

They’re a several ways to submit your schedule. The quickest and most accurate is to download the Excel spreadsheet (Schedule-Results.xls) available in the Results Center, fill in your schedule and submit it using the Submit Your Schedule tool in the Center. You can also submit a Word document, an Excel spreadsheet, a website address where I can find your schedule or another type of electronic file using the Submit Your Schedule tool in the Center. The last and probably the slowest way to submit your schedule is to email your schedule to dpeak@YouthSoccerNet.com and I will post it to YSN.

Second and equally important, is you need to submit your match results as soon after a match as possible. The quickest way to get your results posted live to YSN is to use the Submit a High School Result tool available in the Results Center.

More and more, soccer fans are coming to YSN at night to get the latest results. Many fans now use MATCHTracker to watch for the latest score available on YSN. Many of your fans use the daily Match Alerts to get results sent to them by email.

The only way to make sure that your team stats are included on YSN and are correct is to submit your schedule and game results. Please, join the other area teams and help build a resource for all area soccer fans.

Pembroke bring home the hardware
Pembroke Hill won its first soccer state chanpionship Saturday night when they defeated the three-time state champs Whitfield 1-0 in the finals of the Missouri Class 1 State Championship in Fenton.

Michael Ferguson continued his scoring streak scoring the winning goals in the 48th minute.

11/12/2005 9:09 AM
Pembroke would not be denied in 4-3 win over St. Pius X (Festus)
The Pembroke Hill, St. Pius X (Festus) match (Game summary) sounds like one of those matches you would have loved to have seen. Not to be too chiche but the game's ending is right out of the movies.

Here are the facts and you tell me if this ending doesn't sound the end to the movie Hoosiers. Well, almost.

Pembroke scores first on, according to reports, a fine individual effort by senior Michael Fergusion. The lead was short lived as Kevin McWilliams equalized in the 28th minute. Jared Freese score two more goals for Pius to put Pius up 3-1 at the break.

According to accounts on a couple different websites, the halftime speech by Pembroke coach Matthew Pritchett wasn't about soccer but about heart and desire. Whatever it worked.

The comeback began when a Pius player was whistled for a hand ball that sent Ferguson to spot for the penalty. He slotted the ball past the keeper to pull Pembroke within one at 3-2.

Now, the plot thickens.

With less than a minute remaining in regulation, Pembroke won a corner kick. The cross fell to Ferguson's feet who volley it past the goalie to tie the match. The match ended seconds later 3-3.

The first two OT periods ended with the teams still knotted at 3-3. In the third 10-minute OT period, Pembroke won another corner. Ferguson again made a play towards the ball but missed. The goalie mishandled the ball and it drop into the goal to give Pembroke the 4-3 win.

Here's where the real story differs from the movie. The match Friday night was the state semifinals. Pembroke will face the three-time state champs Whitfield today for the state championship. Whitfield beat Pembroke 3-2 in last year's finals.

Stay tuned for the second half of the movie when Pembroke take on their cross-state rival for all the mables.

Over 400 games with over 1500 goals
With a little over a month to go in the 2005 boys season, YouthSoccerNet.com has collected results from 437 matches played in the Kansas City and surrounding area. In the 400 plus matches, 1547 goals have been scored, nearly a four goal per game average.

422 different players from 117 different teams have scored goals this season. The top 10 goal scorers account for 192 of the 1547 goals or nearly 13%.

The top 10 scoring teams are:

1. Smithville 63
2. Excelsior Springs 57
3. Park Hill South 51
4. Pembroke Hill 50
5. St. Pius X 47
6. Bishop Miege 44
7. Lee's Summit West 42
7. Bishop LeBlond 42
8. St. Thomas Aquinas* 41
9. Raytown South 38
10. Belton 37
* Missouri schools can play more games than Kansas schools, so, for Aquinas to be in the top 10 means their per game average is high.
Also, not all goals from all games have been submitted

There is not historical data that would suggest that 2005 either a normal or abnormal year as far as goals scored. This is the second high school boys season tracked on YSN. In 2004, only 20 teams were tracked. This year over 60 teams are tracked.

Has Rockhurst ever lost three matches at Top Dawg?
Rockhurst face being 0-3 at the Top Dawg Tournament unless they can beat an Aquinas side ranked #3 in the country in the final match of the tournament Saturday night at the Blue Valley Activities Center.

Rockhurst drop their opening match Tuesday to Blue Valley NW in a shootout and got shutout 2-0 Thursday by Park Hill South. As Rockhurst struggled, the Saints keep racking up goals and shutting out opponents. The Saints shutout out Park Hill South 2-0 Tuesday followed by a 3-0 shutout against Blue Valley NW Thursday.

In the past, the final match at Top Dawg brings together two of the traditionally best sides in the city for their only meeting of the year. The winner has bragging rights for the year. Last year, Aquinas won 2-1 on their way to a Kansas State Championship. Rockhurst were runner ups in the Missouri State Championship.

No matter who wins the Saturday night rivalry match, the stands will be rocking from a packed house and the teams will compete on the field.

Does anyone know whether Rockhurst has ever lost all three matches at Top Dawg? If you know, email Editor@YouthSoccerNet.com --YSN

From Warrensburg to Manhattan, Smithville to Emporia
YouthSoccerNet.com now report high school game results from Warrensburg on the east to Manhattan on the west and from Smithville on the north to Emporia on the south. There are over 800 soccer matches in the YSN Soccer Calendar making it the most comprehensive calendar in the area.

YSN wants your game results, stories
YouthSoccerNet.com's goal is to cover every boys and girls high school soccer match that takes place in western Missouri and eastern Kansas. That's a tall order but not impossible with your help.

YSN's COACHES' CENTER is a set of tools that makes it simple for anyone to submit game results. Once in the Center, click on "Submit a High School result". There are two methods for submitting your game results.

First, you find the match you wish to submit from the drop-down menu then click on "Get game info". Next you will get a series of pages asking for the game information. Just follow the directions.

The second method provides a way to submit information on a match not listed on YSN. Click on the "Click here if your game is not listed" and fill in the requested information paying special attention to the formatting of goals information.

You do have to give your name and email address before you can submit game information. YSN needs your email address to verify the information.

YSN not only needs your help with game results but also YSN is looking for users to provide game stories. Both methods for submitting results provide a fill in box to write about the game. You can also email your story to dpeak@YouthSoccerNet.com.

Are there human-interest stories about members of your team? If so, write them or find a student interested in journalism or just a good writer to do the story.

Besides game stories, YSN is looking for bloggers to maintain blogs about soccer at their schools. Currently, two users do blogs. Patrick White, a junior at Aquinas, does the "Saints Beat" and Lauren Isenhower, a freshman at Nebraska, writes about playing with the Nebraska Womens soccer team. If you are interested in doing a blog, email dpeak@YouthSoccerNet.com with your idea.

Interest in YouthSoccerNet.com has grown tremendously over the past 18 months and feeding the beast is much more than the YSN staff (me) can do alone. The only way, I believe, that the site can grow with the growth in interest is by allowing the users to submit more and more of the content. With that, YouthSoccerNet.com is now accepting submissions.

As the transfer market turns
I love the transfer market and it makes for great entertainment. It’s a multi-country soap opera with good guys, bad guys and the players in the middle. The latest episode features a cast of many with all the twist and turns of "As the World turns."

From Spain come "Real World Madrid" starring Real Madrid. The club is the equivalent of the multi-national conglomerate that buy only the best players in the world. The club's latest deal was a raid of two top Brazilian forwards. Real grabbed Julio Baptista from under Arsenal's nose and paid Brazilian side Santos reportedly $30M for Robinho.

A spin off of "Real World Madrid" show is "Coming Home", a real world adventure as Englishman Michael Owen tries to escape the bench in Madrid for a pitch in England. Any pitch will do. With the addition of two strikers to the Real squad Michael will be seeing a lot of the bench and would rather go home.

Owen scores goal as regular as "Old Faithful" and has did so since his wonder goal in the 1998 World Cup where he burst on to the soccer scene. One would think that every club in England would line up to bring home an England favorite son. Oh, contrary. Most clubs are passing with only Manchester United left as a possible suitor.

And speaking of Man U, here is a club that's had more written about it in the last year than steroids in baseball and George Steinbrenner combined. The ongoing series, "Man, U are the Man", is the longest running show ever.

A recent episode of "Man, U are the Man" featured the American Malcolm Glazer hostile take over of the club and the fan outrage at the prospect of an American owner. Man U fans only want trophies and the aging side is chasing Chelsea and its money for the league trophy.

According to the London press, Man U entered the longest running transfer sage of the summer when it entered the race to gain the services of Lyon midfielder Michael Essien. Chelsea made an offer of $25M for the midfield but Lyon is holding out for $38M. My money is on Chelsea and its money to land Essien with Arsenal and Man U licking another Chelsea inflicted wound.

A "Man, U are the Man" sub plot takes place in Germany where Bayern Munich midfielder Michael Ballack is said to have signed a pre-contract with Man U to play for the Manchester squad in 2006. Of course, Munich denied the report and says their captain will sign a new contract before the 2006 season.

And on and on the story lines goes "As the transfer market turns."

This just in. According to the BBC, Newcastle could be a destination for Michael Owen. The story went on to say that there was no offer from Man U, yet. --YSN

KC vs St. Louis
Two KC schools are half way to winning state championships. In their way stand two more St. Louis high school sides.

Both St. Teresa's and Lee's Summit West knocked off St. Louis area schools to advance to the Missouri State Championship match. Yea, Timberland's not St. Louis but Wentzville is closer to St. Louis than KC.

St. Teresa's knocked off the #1 ranked school in the nation according to StudentSportsSoccer.com 3-0 Friday night to advance to the finals against Incarnate Word Academy, another St. Louis school. The Class 2 finals are set for 2 p.m. Saturday in Fenton.

In class 1, Lee's Summit West shutout Timberline 1-0 to advance to today's finals against Bishop DuBourg of St. Louis. The Class 1 finals begin at noon in Fenton.

Look for the KC sides to down their St. Louis opponents and bring the state trophies cross-state to KC. When will the Missouri High School Athletic Association move the State playoffs to KC because all the good sides are in KC? --YSN

A LA derby update
If you follow soccer outside of the U.S. you know about the city derby; Man U vs. Man City, Everton vs. Liverpool, AC Milan vs. Inter Milan to name a few. Now, the U.S. and the MLS has its very own derby and the two sides square off Saturday April 23 in the first installment of the LA derby.

The derby pits the new team in town, Chivas USA against the original LA team, the Galaxy at the Home Depot Center. Chivas is the visiting team on the scoreboard but both teams' home field is the Home Depot Center. Sharing a pitch is unusual in the other cities where derbies take place. Most sides have their own pitch. Everton and Liverpool briefly talked about sharing a new pitch in Liverpool but the idea was canned by the fans.

Chivas will have their share of vocal fans in the stands and the established Galaxy will also draw well. The Galaxy fans won't want to be out done by the new kids on the block which could add up to an unique soccer environment for the match. The match will be televised on ESPN 2 giving all U.S. soccer fans an opportunity to see the first LA Derby.

A packed house of over 27,000 fans watched the first LA derby between Chivas and the Galaxy. LA built three goal lead in the first 32 minutes and cruised to a 3-1 win. --YSN

Donovan; homesick? You got to be kidding
I can't figure out what's up with U.S. international, Landon Donovan. According to a story on the Fox Soccer Channel website, the 23-year-old is homesick and wants to come back to the States and play with the Galaxy of the MLS. It's not that I don't think the MLS is a good league and living near home is a good thing, but to start talking about a return to the States after only a few months in Germany sounds like a player who is frustrated with playing time and not willing to pay his dues to make the senior squad.

His recent stint with Bayer Leverkusen of the German Bundesliga has been about as successful as his first stay as a teenager. Donovan has made limited appearances for the Bundesliga side coming off the bench in the latter stages of several matches. His recent start against Liverpool in the Champions League ended badly with a 3-1 lose to Liverpool and eliminated from the tournament.

What's next for arguably American's best soccer player? Maybe he should buck up and work at making the Leverkusen squad and spend the off-season on the beach in LA.

Wizards in KC
Just read in The Star that an "unidentified local group" interested in purchasing the Wizards is looking at three cities for a soccer-specific stadium. The three cities are Olathe, Lenexa and Riverside.

The Johnson County locations aren't surprising. I believe most fans believe that if a stadium is to be built, it will be built in JOCO. The Riverside location is a surprise though it makes sense from the standpoint of available, cheap land.

Wherever the stadium ends up means that the group did a deal to buy the Wizards and the team will stay in the KC area. That's good.

Jean Carlos Chera has website
Move over Ronaldinho, don't look now Ronaldo because nine-year-old Jean Carlos Chera is becoming a worldwide phenom. The 4ft 6ins midfielder from Associacao Desportiva Atletica soccer club in Brazil now has his first website devoted entirely to all things Jean. The worldwide interest in the phenom continues to blow me away.

The question that begs to be answered is, what single name will he go by? See poll. --YSN

Crazy fans are every where
Whatever the sport, there are passionate fans that lose their common sense when it come to supporting their team. Yesterday, it was South American bottle tossing fans at an U20 soccer match. Today, the action is closer to home. Seems a Kansas University student email a death thread to the KU athletic director after the administration announced that they would use a lottery system to give out the final 200 tickets for Kansas' basketball games against Texas and Missouri. You think the emailer saw either of the games?

SMU signs seven from Dallas Texans
Talk about an instant team. SMU simplified the recruiting process by signing seven members of the Dallas Texans soccer club. SMU coach Schellas Hyndman said, "It is great that we have a group of players exclusively from Texas with seven from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. These student-athletes bring great pride in their hometown to SMU. It will be exciting to have their friends and parents in the crowd supporting our team as we strive to achieve our goals." SMU got a forward, four midfielders and two defenders from the Texans. Sounds like they have covered the center of the pitch from goal to goal.

Hurlers hold Chileans at bay in center of pitch
So, you think the Lambeau Field crowd is tough on opponents. All the Packers fans do is moon the opposition’s bus as it leaves the stadium. At a recent U20 championship match between Columbia and Chile at Armenia Stadium, Columbia, the home team crowd staged a near-riot. Two goals down, the home team staged a comeback that sparked the crowd to lob bottles at the opposition’s bench. As one report described the bottle throwing, “If throwing bottles at the opposing bench was an Olympic event then Colombia could be sure of increasing its medal tally.” One of Chile's substitutes took a direct hit and was knocked down. Columbia went on to get the win 4-3 but the fans continued pelting the pitch with debris. The Chileans took refuge in the center of the pitch, out of range of the Columbian hurlers, for 15 minutes before the crowd lost interest and they could make their way down the tunnel.

English side wants MLS team
Is it Chelsea, maybe Man U or could it be Liverpool who are looking to the MSL for locating a team. According to the Sunday Express of London a secret approach has been made by a top English club to buy a franchise in the American MLS League. Since adidas just signed a partnership deal with the MLS, could it be an adidas sponsorecd English club? That is if you can believe the British press.

Searching for Jean Carlos Chera
Last week the British press was all over the story about Man U tracking nine-year-old Jean Carlos Chera of Associacao Desportiva Atletica soccer club in Brazil. Last Friday, I posted to this blog about the new phenom and the European teams that were tracking the 4ft 9ins midfielder.

Since Friday, over a thousand users from all over the world have come to YSN searching for information of Jean. The users get to YSN from searches on Google, MSN and Yahoo that take them to the Jean blog posting. Once here, the users do a couple more searches for Jean information, mostly for the video, then split.

Nothing posted on YSN has come close to the interest generated by Jean Carlos Chera and I can only guess how many people searched the web for more information on the phenom. I’m sure sociologists have an explanation for the worldwide interest in the newest version of Edson Arantes Do Nascimento (Pelé) who, by the way, was discovered at the ripe old age of 11-years-old.

Man U on trail of 9-year-old phenom
Manchester United is tracking the next soccer phenom, screamed the headline in the Mirror of London today. The England giant wants more on Jean Carlos Chera, a 4ft 6ins, nine-year-old midfielder from Associacao Desportiva Atletica, a small club in the southern state of Parana. Atletica president Adilson Batista Prado confirmed that Manchester United are among the sides tracking Jean. Prado said that seven or eight European clubs have already contracted the club to know more about the latest Brazilian soccer phenom. The explosion of interest in Jean began after his club down-loaded highlights of his matches on its website. The video shows Jean scoring goals from midfield, dribbling past several defenders and playing among 13 and 14-year-olds.

Fox Soccer Channel without darts?
What am I to do? Fox Sports World is going away on Feb. 7 and will be replaced by Fox Soccer Channel. Where am I to find the latest darts news? Or more importantly, where I am going to get the latest cricket results? I also love watching those Australian Football refs (I guess they are call refs but now I will probably never know) emphatically pointing after a score (I guess its called scoring). As of Feb. 7, I can only see soccer from the U.S., England, France and maybe Spain and Italy. I guess I will have to grin and bare it. I am holding on to hope that cricket results will remain.

18-year-old takes Euro 2004 by storm
The notoriously harsh English press can't get enough of Wayne Rooney, the 18-year-old soccer phenom who has taken England to the quarter-finals of Euro 2004. Both the front and back pages are covered with Rooney's Euro 2004 exploits which include two goals in each of England's last two matches.

The Daily Mirror healine read, "Heroo! We're lovin' it" followed by, "Wayne Rooney continued the Euro 2004 fairytale last night as his glorious double fired England into the quarter-finals."

The Daily Express' headline read, "Wayne making it Eu-roo 2004" followed by, "Wayne Rooney crowned himself the king of Euro 2004 with another amazing show as England reached the quarter-finals in Lisbon last night."

Rooney's coach, Sven-Goran Eriksson, proclaimed, "Wayne Rooney is the most exciting footballer since Pele." England's captain, David Beckham, who knows a thing or two about player hype, agrees with his coach, "I think he's probably right," he said. "It's a great compliment but I think he deserves it because of how he is performing."

What's next for Rooney? England hope there are more goals and an Euro 2004 cup. After the Euros, there is possibly a new contract with a new team making a heck of a lot more than what he's making now.

Pretty heady stuff for an 18-year-old.

Donovan diplomacy
Landon Donovan seems to be covering all his bases concerning his possible move back to Bayer Leverkusen after the end of the MLS season. Donovan said in a statement released on MLSnet.com, "I am happy playing in MLS and for the Earthquakes and I am excited about the possibility of winning more MLS Cup championships here in San Jose while also leading the U.S. national team back to the World Cup." Donovan told the Bayer Leverkusen website that, "I look forward to my return and the challenge with Bayer Leverkusen."

Great week of football/basketball
Just finished watching Chelsea vs. Arsenal Champions League match where Arsenal came from behind to get a 1-1 draw and collect the ever important away goal. The next match at Highbury should be a spirited contest where Chelsea must win to advance to the semis.

Next up, it's the Man U. vs. Arsenal EPL matchup Sunday on Pay-for-View where, I believe, a wounded Man U. will be the first side this season to knock off the Gunners. Man City vs. Fulham follows the Man U. tie where a couple Americans for Fulham will see action against City.

Between the quality football, there's quality basketball in the NCAA Championships. High on my list of "must watch" is Kansas vs. UAB and Oklahoma State vs. Pitt. Olkahoma State is my pick to win it all.

I hope to throw in a couple hours on my road bike as it looks like a warm weekend. The bike ride will, very likely, be the only time I venture outdoors. Next week, I will share any sarcastic comments from my wife about not moving from the sofa for hours.

What's missing from the weekend activities (or lack of activity) is club soccer. My son's club team has no game, practice or gathering. This lack of club soccer is the main reason I can hang out in front of the tube watching football and basketball.

With success comes transfer window
Finally, FIFA noticed the MLS and to reward the eight-year-old league, FIFA told U.S. Soccer Federation, which regulates soccer in America, that U.S. teams must comply with new transfer window rules.

FIFA says the MLS can obtain or trade away players via transfer or loan only during the transfer windows running from January 1 to March 31 and from August 15 until September 15. The FIFA transfer window rules only apply to players under contract.

There are many implication of the new FIFA rules and the first causality of the new rules is the Landan Donovan loan deal with Portsmouth of the EPL. Read more about the transfer window and the implications of the rule.

Adu in a town near you
It's my turn to jump on the Freddy Adu bandwagon. I have put it off long enough and with the impending release of the MLS 2004 schedule, my first thought on the new seasaon is "WHEN WILL ADU BE IN KANSAS CITY TO PLAY THE WIZARDS?" My guess is I am not alone, as many U.S. soccer fans will circle the United verses their team's match as a must see.

So, the Bec's move is biggest sports story
I would agree that David Beckham's move to Real Madrid was a huge story and caused reporters all over the world to rush for pen and paper to cover ever move of the England midfielder as he settled in Spain. But what about Chelsea's move to turn the pecking order of world elite clubs up-side-down with its spending on players and their play on the pitch?

As 2003 comes to an end, Chelsea is in the hunt for EPL hardware, challenging in the Champions League and is rumored to have offers out for every world-class player on the planet. Only time will tell if Roman Abramovich billions can buy the hardware but the bucks have clearly sent a message to the world elite clubs that there is a new team in the house.

From my provincial point of view, Tim Howard's move from the MLS to first choice goalie for the Manchester United and all the ado about Freddy Adu and his eventual signing with the MLS rate among my top stories of 2003.

Man U came to the U.S. over the summer for a tour and returned to England with a new goalie. Howard helped Man U to the top of the EPL table and a place in the knockout round of the Champions League and that’s since August.

And what can you say about Freddy Adu that hasn't already been said. The 14-year-old whiz kid has taken the soccer world by storm. Every elite team in the world was supposed to have talked to him about signing with their club. Freddy ended up signing with the MLS. He hasn't been called up for the U.S Senior team yet but is that far off?

Looked like I spoke to soon on Chelsea as the club recorded its second lose in three matches on Boxer Day. The club rebounded with a convincing win over Portsmouth in their Sunday match and the Chelsea train rolls on. --YSN

There are no timeouts in soccer!!
Like there is "no crying in baseball" there should be "no timeouts in soccer" other than the occasional stoppage for the melodramatic performance by a player victimized by the invisible tackle.

I was caught by surprise while watching the College Cup over the weekend when the announcer said they were breaking for the mid-period commercial break. What’s up with that, I thought? I started complaining loudly to my soccer playing son that the NCAA and ESPN had butchered the “beautiful game” and both organizations should be made to pay for their disrespect. The second half timeout had no impact on the final out come of the match. Indiana was destined to win the Cup for their retiring coach and nothing short of a full-scale blizzard, which it nearly was, would stop the Hoosiers from taking the title. It’s just that the NCAA’s refusal to play by FIFA rules, for no reason other than they are the NCAA, makes no sense.

Should there be reform in the college game? I think so. Will it happen? Probably not. Will kids keep going to colleges and playing soccer? Yep. Will there be mid-period commercials in the College Cup? Yes, as long as ESPN sells the spots and the NCAA allows ESPN to sell the spots. Will American player become worse players because of timeouts? Probably not. Only time will tell if second tier leagues, like in the rest of the world, replace the college game as a place to develop players. Is there anything worse than timeouts in soccer? YES, playing soccer on a football field where you have to look at those annoying yard lines. Let’s hear it for more soccer pitches.

McBride back to England
Brian McBride is becoming the MLS's "gun for hire". For the second year in a row, McBride could be headed for Blackburn of the EPL when the January transfer window opens.

McBride's resume includes a couple stints in England, a successful World Cup where he scored a couple important goals and a career in the MLS. He's big, strong, good in the air and ideal target striker.

Blackburn is perilously close to relegation and Blackburn Rovers boss Graeme Souness believe McBride gives Blackburn a "different appoach.".

Souness says, "He's a target man, he's extremely hard working, and if we are going to be involved in a scrap for the next six months then I only want people who are going to work their socks off and give me everything every time they go out there."
